In India, the association between man and elephant goes back 5000 years. Celebrated in mythology, heralded as a symbol of India's imperial past and part of the religious ceremonies of temples in South India, the elephant is an integral part of Indian folklore. In the North-East, the creature has been domesticated and serves its owner in so many ways that it is considered part of the family. It's no co-incidence that the elephant-headed Ganesha is India's most popular deity.

Not too long ago, the domain of the Asian Elephant (Elephus Maximus) ranged from Central, South to Southeast Asia. Today, after years of rampant poaching and habitat destruction, it is confined to tiny pockets in Southeast Asia and India. In fact, India holds more than half of elephants global population. Jim Corbett Park is the northernmost extend of the Asian Elephant, while Kaziranga in the northeast and the southern domain of Bandipur, Nagarahole and Periyar are some of the finest remaining habitats of these giants in India.

The Indian Elephant belongs the sub-species of Elephas Maximus indicus, and belong the races of Asian elephant Elephas maximus. 

The Elephant found in India is larger, specially their front legs are larger and back body is thinner than the Asian Elephant which found in Thailand. 
Indian Elephant can live easily in different kind of environment from icy cool mountain ranges to deserted and forested area. Its enormous size and adaptive radiation quality makes him to live in such kind of diverse habitat. 

The Indian Elephants are the largest mammals having the biggest brain than any other animal on the earth. The weight of his brain is about 5 kg or 11 lbs. The total weight of the elephant is near about 3-5 tons. The enormous and strong trunk of the elephant has 100,000 muscles that make it perfectly proficient to pick up even a small article to heavy items. The trunk of the elephant is boneless or there is no cartilage. The outer teeth of the elephant are large and very precious. It is used in handicraft items called Hanthidant or ivory. The actual teeths of the elephants are in its mouth. It used its enormous ears like a fan, that cools its blood vessels. 

The Elephant are tamed and tactful animal. Elephants grasping power is better than any other animal. It can easily climb on the mountain and plain terrain.
